The Cuaba Exclusivos gives its name to the very vitola it inhabits — a 127mm by 42 ring gauge perfecto that stands as the archetypal expression of the Cuaba philosophy. Where the broader Cuban portfolio favours parejos and robustos, Cuaba commits unreservedly to the figurado, and the Exclusivos embodies that commitment in a Medium-bodied format suited to a contemplative afternoon smoke. The slim ring gauge emphasises the wrapper's contribution, making this a cigar for those who prize nuance and delicacy over blunt power.
Lighting the Exclusivos reveals a surprisingly fragrant opening, with floral notes of orange blossom rising above a base of dry cedar and hay. The tapered foot initially sharpens the spice, but as the burn widens toward the cigar's fuller middle section, the profile broadens into warm baking spice and toasted coconut. The draw is fine and measured thanks to the slender gauge, producing a smoke that feels elegant rather than voluminous.
The second half shifts into richer territory. Roasted chestnut and a whisper of leather enter, supported by a mineral undertone that recalls the limestone soils of the Pinar del Río. A subtle honeyed sweetness threads through the final third, and the finish leaves a clean, woody resonance. The Exclusivos never pushes into heavy strength, instead favouring definition and clarity — a cigar that speaks quietly but says a great deal.
Crafted entirely from Vuelta Abajo leaf, the Exclusivos demands considerable skill from the roller. The perfecto's varying diameter means the bunch must be assembled with graduated tension so the draw remains open at the narrowest points. The wrapper is applied with a hand finesse that conceals the seams along the curved contours, and a well-aged example burns with commendable consistency.
The Exclusivos pairs splendidly with a dry amontillado sherry, whose nutty, slightly oxidative character echoes the cigar's chestnut and cedar notes. A cup of unsweetened Darjeeling also provides a clean counterpoint that lets the floral top notes shine.
Among Cuaba's regular production line, the Exclusivos represents the most balanced expression of the brand's figurado expertise. Its moderate size and medium strength make it an excellent daily figurado for the devoted enthusiast.
Launched in 1996, Cuaba revived the nearly lost art of figurado rolling and remains the only post-Revolution Cuban marca devoted exclusively to these historic shapes. See Cuaba on Wikipedia and the Habanos S.A. page for further context.
Maintain the Exclusivos at 65–70% relative humidity. The 42 ring gauge is sensitive to over-humidification, which can tighten the draw; err toward the lower end of the range. Rotate stocks periodically to ensure even moisture distribution.
Why does the Cuaba Exclusivos have a tapered foot?
The tapered foot is a hallmark of the perfecto shape inherited from nineteenth-century cigar making. It allows for an easy light and a concentrated first few puffs before the burn widens into the cigar's full flavour.
How long should I expect the Exclusivos to smoke?
At 127mm by 42, anticipate roughly 45 to 60 minutes of smoking time depending on pace, making it ideal for a focused midday or early evening session.
