A Cuban cigar is a puro — made entirely from tobacco grown in Cuba, primarily in the Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río, the finest tobacco-growing land in the world. Cuban tobacco carries a distinctive twang: an earthy, mineral quality that no other origin replicates. Totalmente a mano, rolled by torcedores in state factories under Habanos S.A.
The flagship Cuban marcas are Cohiba (premium, El Laguito factory), Montecristo (best-selling worldwide), Partagás (full-bodied, established 1845), Romeo y Julieta (the Churchill brand), Hoyo de Monterrey (mild and approachable), Trinidad (once diplomatic-only), Bolívar (strong and earthy), H. Upmann (classic and balanced), Ramón Allones (intense and full) and Punch (medium and aromatic). Habanos S.A. produces 27 marcas in total.
Edición Limitada (EL) is Habanos S.A.'s annual limited release program. EL cigars use non-regular production vitolas, wrappers aged at least two years from upper primings — darker, stronger leaves from the top of the plant — and are produced in limited quantities. Each EL carries the release year on the band. Examples include Cohiba Talisman EL 2017 and Trinidad Topes EL 2016.
Store Cuban cigars in a humidor at 65–70% relative humidity and 18–21°C (65–70°F). Use Spanish cedar for the interior. Avoid direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations. With proper storage, Cuban cigars age gracefully for decades — the profile smooths, the twang softens, and complex notes emerge. Look for plume (white crystals, a sign of aging) versus mould (blue-green fuzz, a sign of excess humidity).
Authentic Cuban cigars carry the Cuban government warranty seal on the box, a holographic Habanos seal, a factory code stamped on the bottom, and individual bands with precise printing. The wrapper should have visible veins, a triple cap, and a firm-but-spongy roll. Counterfeits often have misaligned bands, missing seals, and rubbery wrappers. Read our authenticity guide and buy only from authorised Habanos retailers.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 and Romeo y Julieta Churchills are widely recommended for beginners. Both are medium-bodied with approachable profiles — cream, cedar, hay and light floral notes — that introduce the Cuban palate without overwhelming it. The Montecristo No. 4, a 5 1/8 × 42 petit corona, is another excellent entry point: reliable, accessible and available in every Habanos shop.
Vitola is the Cuban term for a cigar's format — its shape and size, expressed as length × ring gauge (1/64 of an inch). For example, the Montecristo No. 2 is a piramide measuring 6 1/8 × 52. Common vitolas include mareva (robusto), prominente (churchill), piramide (torpedo), lancero (panatela) and belicoso.
