In the heart of the Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone is San Juan y Martinez, birthplace of Hoyo de Monterrey. The Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the great Vegas de Primera, is marked by a gate on the town’s central square engraved with the word Hoyo de Monterrey.
