The Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchills is a relatively recent addition to the brand's portfolio, designed to bridge the gap between the classic 47-ring Churchill and the modern preference for thicker ring gauges. At 130mm × 55, it is both shorter and broader than the original Julieta No. 2 — a format that trades smoking duration for smoke volume and blend complexity. The 55 ring gauge allows the torcedor to incorporate a more elaborate filler blend, producing a richer, more layered flavour experience while maintaining the medium-bodied character that defines the Romeo y Julieta house style. This is the Churchill for the smoker who wants depth without endurance.
The Wide Churchills opens with a generous, creamy draw that immediately distinguishes it from the narrower 47-ring Churchill. The 55 ring gauge produces a high volume of cool smoke, and the first third delivers cedar, cream, and a subtle vanilla sweetness that is the Romeo y Julieta signature. A light hay note and a whisper of white pepper complete the opening, which is approachable and inviting without being simplistic.
The second third is where the wide format earns its keep. The larger ring gauge allows the torcedor to use additional ligero leaves in the blend, and the result is a more complex mid-section: toasted almond, honey, a dry oak quality, and a faint floral note that recalls the brand's name (the flowers of Juliet's balcony, if you will). The burn is even and the ash holds firmly. The smoke texture is notably silky — the wider gauge produces a cooler smoke that is gentler on the palate, allowing the subtler notes to register clearly.
The final third introduces a mild earthiness, a return of cedar in a drier form, and a leather note on the finish. The cigar never exceeds medium strength, but the wide format gives it a satisfying weight and presence. The finish is clean and long, leaving a residual creaminess that invites a second cigar. The shorter length compared to the classic Churchill means the smoking session is more concentrated — roughly 60 minutes rather than 90+ — which many modern smokers find preferable.
The 55 ring gauge is one of the more challenging formats to roll consistently, as the wider bunch must maintain even density across its diameter to avoid tunnelling or canoeing. Briones Montoto's rollers handle this vitola with the skill that comes from producing it as a regular production item — the construction is reliable, the cap is triple-applied, and the wrapper is smooth and properly tensioned. The draw is open but not loose, and the cigar burns to a clean nub.
The Wide Churchills' medium body and cool smoke make it a versatile pairing cigar. Aged rum brings out the honey and cedar notes, while a medium-bodied red wine — a Rioja Reserva or a Châteaufort — complements the almond and oak character. Coffee works throughout the smoke, and the cigar's moderate strength means it will not overwhelm a post-lunch espresso.
As a regular production cigar, the Wide Churchills offers the blend complexity of a 55-ring gauge format at a more accessible level than the Gran Reserva variant. It is well-suited to the aficionado who appreciates the Churchill heritage but prefers the broader, cooler smoke that modern ring gauges provide. Its position in the regular lineup makes it consistently available, which is a practical advantage over limited editions.
Romeo y Julieta has crafted cigars in Havana since 1875. The brand is indelibly associated with the Churchill vitola, named after Sir Winston Churchill, who was a devoted smoker of the marque. Production is managed by Habanos S.A. at the Briones Montoto factory, with all tobacco sourced from the Vuelta Abajo region.
Store at 65–70% RH and 18–20°C. The Wide Churchills benefits from six months to two years of humidor ageing, during which the cream notes deepen and the transitions between thirds become smoother. The 55 ring gauge means the cigar has substantial filler mass, so extended ageing (3–5 years) will produce a notably more integrated and mellow smoke.
What is the difference between the Wide Churchills and the classic Churchills?
The classic Churchills measures 178mm × 47 (Julieta No. 2), providing a longer, narrower smoke. The Wide Churchills at 130mm × 55 is shorter and broader, producing a cooler, more voluminous smoke with a more complex filler blend. The flavour family is similar, but the Wide format delivers more intensity in a shorter time.
Is the 55 ring gauge better than the 47?
Neither is objectively better. The 55 ring gauge produces cooler smoke and allows a more complex blend, which some smokers prefer. The 47 ring gauge concentrates flavours more and provides a longer smoking session. The choice depends on personal preference for smoke temperature, duration, and draw.
How long does the Wide Churchills take to smoke?
At 130mm × 55, expect approximately 60 to 75 minutes of smoking time.
